FEC introduces retooled, streamlined, user-centered website

WASHINGTON – The Federal Election Commission has introduced its new website, offering improved navigation and an array of intuitive new tools to mine the agency’s rich campaign finance data set.

Easier to read and mobile-friendly, the new website allows users to access a significantly wider universe of campaign finance transactions than the Commission has ever been able to offer. On the new site, users can conduct custom searches of campaign finance transactions and save or download their customized results.

“The new website helps us fulfill our vital mission of providing transparency and disclosure of campaign finance information,” said Chairman Steven T. Walther. “We believe that improved access to this information will increase public confidence in and engagement with our democratic process.”

The Commission partnered with 18F, a digital services delivery team in the General Services Administration (GSA), to design and develop the new website using user-centered methodologies. The team designed the website in phases, allowing the Commission to launch new features faster than it would by releasing a completely redesigned fec.gov. The team also employed an agile approach to designing the new website, allowing for experimentation, user feedback and continual refining of the features based on communication with those users.

The new website offers three primary navigation channels to help users reach the primary focus areas: campaign finance data, help for candidates and committees, and legal resources. New features include a glossary, exportable campaign finance data and new data visualization tools. Some features have not yet made the transition to the new website and will remain accessible through the old site, known as classic.fec.gov.

“Our new website is the fruit of years of hard work by the FEC staff and 18F,” said Vice Chair Caroline C. Hunter. “We are grateful to the staff, who have put long hours into this project, and the scores of users who have offered their ideas and tested ours during the redevelopment of fec.gov.”

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
