District Court issues opinion in Lieu, et al. v. FEC
WASHINGTON – The United States District Court for the District of Columbia on Thursday issued a Memorandum Opinion and Order in Lieu, et al. v. FEC (Case 1:16-cv-02201), granting the Commission’s motion to dismiss. In November 2016, Representative Ted Lieu, Representative Walter Jones, Senator Jeff Merkley, State Senator (Ret.) John Howe, Zephyr Teachout and Michael Wager filed a complaint challenging the Commission’s unanimous dismissal of MUR 7101 (House Majority PAC). The district court concluded that the Commission’s dismissal of MUR 7101 was not contrary to law because the Commission properly applied the D.C. Circuit’s en banc ruling in SpeechNow.Org v. FEC.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is an independent regulatory agency that administers and enforces federal campaign finance laws. The FEC has jurisdiction over the financing of campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the Presidency and the Vice Presidency. Established in 1975, the FEC is composed of six Commissioners who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
