Comments sought on proposed rulemaking on candidate salaries

May 3, 2021

On May 3, 2021, the Commission published a notice of availability in the Federal Register at 86 Fed. Reg. 23300 that seeks public comment on a petition for rulemaking filed by Nabilah Islam.

The petition asks the Commission to amend 11 CFR 113.1(g) to extend the period during which a candidate can draw a salary from campaign funds; establish a minimum salary for candidates being paid from campaign funds; and designate the payment of certain healthcare costs as permissible uses of campaign funds.

All comments must be in writing and submitted on or before July 2, 2021. Comments may be submitted electronically via the Commission’s website, reference REG 2021-01. The Commission will not consider the petition’s merits until after the comment period closes. If the Commission decides that the petition has merit, it may begin a rulemaking proceeding. The Commission will announce any action that it takes in the Federal Register.
