AOR 2020-01: Nabilah for Georgia

July 2, 2020

On June 30, 2020, the Commission closed the file on an advisory opinion request (AOR) by Nabilah Islam, a former candidate for the Democratic nomination in Georgia’s 7th congressional district, and her principal campaign committee, Nabilah for Georgia. The request asked whether the committee may use campaign funds to pay the cost of the candidate’s health insurance premiums while the candidate works full-time on her campaign and maintains no other employment. On June 9, 2020, Ms. Islam was defeated in the primary election. As Ms. Islam is no longer a candidate for federal office, the advisory opinion request no longer presents “a specific action or activity that the requesting person plans to undertake” and therefore no longer qualifies as an advisory opinion request.
